Welcome to Milpitas Adult Education
Dear Milpitas Community Members,
My name is Giuliana Brahim, the new Principal of Milpitas Adult Education and Corrections Division. I am very thrilled and inspired to take on my new role. MUSD Board Members and Superintendent Jordan have placed great confidence in me; I am humbled at their trust.
I have been part of the Milpitas Unified School District’s Family since 2002. I came to the United States from my home country of Peru in South America in 1997. My parents were immigrants in Peru--they came from Palestine in the Middle East, to look for a better future for themselves. I started teaching ESL in the evenings at the Ayer site and moved to become a correctional educator. Many of you might not know that Milpitas Adult Education is the largest educational provider for the Santa Clara County Office of the Sheriff’s at the Elmwood, Correctional Center for Women and Main Jail facilities. In 2007 I started working at the facility, teaching GED and basic computer skills. I then moved to become program specialist and was the Adult Ed Assistant Principal for the past two years.
In my first year as Principal, my focus will be to integrate the mission of Adult Education to MUSD’s culture of WE and the community of Milpitas. Last year, was a very successful year for our adult learners. Many of them were promoted to higher level of ESL, became citizens and started exploring transition to postsecondary education in community colleges. Over 100 students obtained their GED and or High School Equivalency certificate at both sites Ayer and Corrections. What an amazing accomplishment! A heartfelt congratulations to all!
Adult Education is about hope, opportunities and second chances. Education is the piece of the puzzle that will equip the learner with the tools to move forward in the workplace or academic opportunities or being an active member in our community. Learning English as a Second Language, learning a new skill, taking the class you always wanted to take, are some of the many ways in which WE can grow and contribute to our community.
As a member of the South Bay Consortium for Adult Education, Milpitas Adult Education continues to provide seamless transitions of upper level ESL students to our local community colleges. Having this in mind, we are very excited at the start of the Early Childhood Development classes taught by San Jose City College staff at the Ayer site. Our hope is that this is one of many future collaborations.
This year, Adult Ed’s Student Council will continue to engage in activities inside and outside our school, becoming more visible participants in the community. We are eager to participate in district-wide events and support MUSD’s families. I cordially invite you to visit our school site. Let us know how can WE support YOU.
Our goal is to contribute to your personal and academic success!
Sincerely,
Giuliana Brahim
