Paraprofessional Pathway Program
This year we are offering free paraprofessional training to 40 aspiring candidates in two cohorts in the 2024-25 school year. Application is on a first-come first-served basis.
This includes:
A free 5-week paraprofessional preparation program at Milpitas Adult Education (classes will be held twice a week for 5 weeks)
Free ParaPro test (test has to be redeemed and taken within 6 months of completion of MAE's Paraprofessional Program)
Free CPR training
A 30-hour paid internship (as a classroom paraprofessional) for the top 5 finishers from each cohort. (Students qualify based on a combination of coursework, assignment completion, classroom participation, and attendance).
Pre-requisites
Milpitas resident
Take a pre-test to determine eligibility based on CASAS scores for reading, math, and writing proficiency.

Possess a High School Diploma or equivalent.
Course Competencies:
Understanding the value of providing instructional and other direct services to all students
Understanding the roles and responsibilities of certificated/licensed staff and paraeducators
Ability to practice ethical and professional standards of conduct, including the requirements of confidentiality
Ability to communicate with colleagues, follow instructions, and use problem-solving and other skills that will enable the paraeducator to work as an effective member of the instructional team
Ability to provide positive behavioral support and management
Awareness of diversity among the children, youth, families, and colleagues with whom they work
Knowledge and application of the elements of effective instruction to assist teaching and learning as developed by the certificated/licensed staff in a variety of settings
Knowledge of and ability to follow health, safety, and emergency procedures of the employing agency
Awareness of personal care and/or health-related support.

What will you learn?
This course covers the skills needed to successfully work in the support of teachers and students in a classroom. Major topics of study include English Language Arts, Mathematics, and Soft Skills.
Upon successful completion of the ETS ParaPro*** exam and/or local school district exam, the student will receive an industry recognized certificate from the Educational Testing Services (ETS) and/or adult school Certificate of Achievement that can be used to satisfy industry requirement for employment as a Paraprofessional.
***The ETS ParaPro test is administered by ETS. Milpitas Adult Education is an authorized testing center.
